When learning becomes earning
What makes Pokémon compulsive is filling gaps ("12 of 40", empty silhouettes), random payouts, a currency, and rewards promised for doing a task. That last one is the overjustification effect: when children expect a reward for a task, they lose their own interest in it, and learning becomes earning.
