Theory: Words such as synthetic (as in "synthetic biology") or artificial (as in "artificial intelligence") are popular, cause they provide us with a fake sense of control, certainty & separation. Talking about creating *real* intelligence or life is a very different ballgame.
I find it astonishing how deeply ingrained the notion of "Progress" is in contemporary culture. The idea that there is a singular point in the distant future we are racing towards and things keep getting "better", is deeply religious and unscientific.
