Longmen Grottoes is located in Luoyang, Henan Province. Emperor Xiaowendi of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386 - 534) originally directed the construction in 493 when he moved capital to Luoyang. The grottoes were continuously built until the Northern Song Dynasty (960 - 1127).
