AI in the Wild - Sustainability in the Age of Artificial Intelligence - by Peter Dauvergne
This book analyzes the complex relationship between AI and sustainability. Using analytical tools from environmental politics, it describes the potential for AI to restore balance to earth systems — like its use in wildlife monitoring and improving efficiency of the electricity grid — but also emphasizes its capacity to reinforce economic and political structures, like resource extraction and suppression of activists, that have resulted in modern environmental crisis.
Machine learning for geographically differentiated climate change mitigation in urban areas - Nikola Milojevic Dupon & Felix Creutzig
Traditionally, mitigation policies have been guided by coarse-scale scenario analysis. However, more and more data are available that can be used to characterize the carbon emissions of cities, from building footprints to mobility patterns. More than simply guiding efficiency improvements, the authors advocate that these data inform decarbonization via urban planning and policy recommendations, through a meta-algorithm they call Machine Learning for low-carbon Urban Planning.
Advancing AI for Earth Science: A Data Systems Perspective - by Manil Maskey, Hamed Alemohammad, Kevin J. Murphy, and Rahul Ramachandran
Tackling data challenges and incorporating physics into machine learning models will help unlock the potential of artificial intelligence to answer Earth science questions.

Political power and renewable energy futures: A critical review (sciencedirect)
We theorize connections between energy systems and democractic political power.
Renewable energy opens opportunities for democratic energy development.
Tensions for energy democracy concern governance, technologies and competing agendas. Attention is needed regarding how and for whom new energy soures are concentrated.
Tasmania declares itself 100 per cent powered by renewable electricity
The Tasmania government has declared that it has become the first Australian state, and one of just a handful of jurisdictions worldwide, to be powered entirely by renewable electricity. In a statement released on Friday, Tasmanian energy minister Guy Barnett said that state had effectively become entirely self-sufficient for supplies of renewable electricity, supplied by the state’s wind and hydroelectricity projects.
A Bot Made Frank Sinatra Cover Britney Spears. YouTube Removed It Over Copyright Claims
Months ago, we asked @dadabots to have an AI approximation of Frank Sinatra sing "Toxic." YouTube removed it over copyright claims, beginning an unprecedented legal case initiated by, fought over, and perhaps decided by algorithms. Here's how it went down.
How I Spend My Attention - essay by Kenta Nagamine
"What you pay attention to becomes your life."
"Attention is like energy in that without it no work can be done, and in doing work it is dissipated. We create ourselves by how we invest this energy. Memories, thoughts, and feelings are all shaped by how we use it. And it is an energy under our control, to do with as we please; hence, attention is our most important tool in the task of improving the quality of experience." - Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi.
"Examining my life with the measurement of attention tells me who I am. Checking how much time I spend doing things I do in life is one way to see how much attention I am giving to each of them.
"
"Similarly, when I try to pay more attention to the good in others, I would be able to enjoy the camaraderie of them more. Trying to be nice makes me nicer."
"Another dimension to attention that's not tied with time is the depth of attention."
"Everything has to be a choice, or else it’s a form of addiction. I always want to 'choose' to use my phone because otherwise, it might be equivalent to doing nothing. "
"You can have more experiences in life by simply paying more attention. What you pay attention to is going to be your life. It's so basic that it hits me."

Against Method - Outline of an Anarchistic Theory of Knowledge - by Paul Feyerabend
"Neither science nor rationality are universal measures of excellence. They are particular traditions, unaware of their historical grounding."
"My intention is not to replace one set of general rules by another such set: my intention is, rather, to convince the reader that all methodologies, even the most obvious ones, have their limits. - Paul Feyerabend, p.24, Against Method

'Sistine Chapel of the ancients' rock art discovered in remote Amazon forest (Guardian)
Tens of thousands of ice age paintings across a cliff face shed light on people and animals from 12,500 years ago
Speculating on whether the paintings had a sacred or other purpose, he said: “It’s interesting to see that many of these large animals appear surrounded by small men with their arms raised, almost worshipping these animals.” Observing that the imagery includes trees and hallucinogenic plants, he added: “For Amazonian people, non-humans like animals and plants have souls, and they communicate and engage with people in cooperative or hostile ways through the rituals and shamanic practices that we see depicted in the rock art.”

Second Swiss firm allegedly sold encrypted spying devices
According to SRF sources, the Swiss company Omnisec AG had ties to US intelligence services. This follows revelations in February by SRF, German television ZDF and The Washington Post that Zug-based firm Crypto AG was at the heart of a huge international spying operation led by the CIA, and to a lesser extent by the German BND spy agency. Omnisec was one of the largest competitors of Crypto AG.
