From chalkboards to chatbots: Transforming learning in Nigeria, one prompt at a time
New randomized, controlled trial of students using GPT-4 as a tutor in Nigeria. 6 weeks of after-school AI tutoring = 2 years of typical learning gains, outperforming 80% of other educational interventions. And it helped all students, especially girls who were initially behind.

Question for parents: With super-intelligent AIs about to flatten the job market and outshine human teachers (social skills aside) in just a few years, what’s your plan for education? Still trusting schools built for the industrial age?

With LLMs making app development dramatically easier, I’ve started creating bespoke mini apps for my 5-year-old daughter as a hobby. It’s incredibly rewarding—especially since few seem to be exploring how AI can uniquely serve this age group.

"Where did the global elite go to school" - by Ricardo Salas-Diaz and Kevin Young.
Interesting paper on where 6000 global elites went to college. Billionaires, CEOs, heads of state, central bankers, etc. In a word: Harvard. Fully 10% of global elites went to Harvard. Elite US schools are over-represented (23% IvyPlus), but nobody comes close to Harvard.

Matrix Education
While Mr.Smith types that run the matrix frequently will signal they seeks "creative and innovate solutions and people", in reality they “don't want a population capable of critical thinking, they want obedient workers, people just smart enough to run the machines and just dumb enough to passively accept their situation.” (as George Carlin put it). Schooling was not built to enhance creativity and critical thinking, but to shape people for conformity and submission. Despite the loud marketing chatter, AI - that's owned by Mr.Smith - will not change a thing about this dynamic, but likely make it even more extreme.

Has anyone built any truly compelling things for kids (age 4 - 12) with all the gen AI stuff yet, beyond shallow gimmicks? Any success stories?
-
People working on Reinforcement Learning or AI safety that don't have kids can not be taken serious. Anyone with small kids knows that "preventing agents hacking the reward function" or "designing agent incentives to avoid reward tampering" is categorically impossible and it is ok.
