Committing to climate-neutrality by 2050: Commission proposes European Climate Law and consults on the European Climate Pact (EU Comission)
On 4 March 2020 the European Commission has opened the first round of feedback regarding two new legislative proposals aimed at tackling carbon emissions and taxation of certain fuels. The proposals are planned to materialize into European Directives by mid 2021.
Studies Show Fracking Ban Would Wreak Havoc On US Economy
A new study from the American Petroleum Institute (API), with modeling data provided by the consulting firm OnLocation, details how a nationwide ban on hydraulic fracturing (colloquially known as “fracking”) could trigger a recession, would seriously damage U.S. economic and industrial output, considerably increase household energy costs, and make life much harder and costlier for American farmers. API argues that a fracking ban would lead to a cumulative loss in gross domestic product (GDP) of $7.1 trillion by 2030, including $1.2 trillion in 2022 alone.

Tasmania sets world-leading target of 200 per cent renewables by 2040
Tasmania’s Liberal government has just announced a possible world-first: A renewable energy target of 200 per cent by 2040, powered by a doubling of the tiny island state’s hydro, wind and solar energy production.
Germany hits record 61% renewables for month of February
Renewable energy sources provided a record 61.2% of Germany’s net public electricity generation in February, according to figures provided by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), which also showed that wind energy provided nearly half of the country’s electricity during the month.
The @EU_Commission just presented their strategy to shape Europe‘s digital future. See this summary by @AlexandraGeese
On the digital strategy: „Information and communication technologies are expected to achieve 10% of the overall reduction in CO² emissions in all sectors by 2030, i.e. one fifth of the 50 percent reduction envisaged in the Green New Deal. This is a good start, but does not exploit the technical potential.“
So who exactly is Christiana Figueres? - by Winter Oak
Illustrating how big business and the numerous western "old boy" and "intelligence" networks are heavily intertwined with so called "eco-activist" and "climate action" groups. Or in the words of Vladimir Leni: "The best way to control the opposition is to lead it ourselves."
Uber and Lyft generate 70 percent more pollution than trips they displace: study
According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, ride-hailing trips today result in an estimated 69% more climate pollution on average than the trips they displace. In cities, ride-hailing trips typically displace low-carbon trips, such as public transportation, biking, or walking. Uber and Lyft could reduce these emissions with a more concerted effort to electrify its fleet of vehicles or by incentivizing customers to take pooled rides, the group recommends.
Uber Adding To Air Pollution In Europe - Report
The report suggests the surge in taxi apps like Uber is actually contributing to air pollution and climate change. Data compiled by Euromonitor shows a correlation between the surge in the number of ride-share drivers in major European cities and increasing levels of air pollution.
Things I Learned From Five Years in Climate Tech - by Evan Meagher
Over the past five years, I’ve worked at two startups in what is now being called the climate tech sector1. Given the recent surge in interest in this space, I thought it would be worthwhile to record a handful of lessons that I’ve learned from this experience. These lessons span business strategy and the realities of the electric utility industry.
Coronavirus cuts China’s greenhouse gas emissions by a quarter
Reducing industrial working hours and keeping construction sites and shops closed has curbed the use of coal and cut output of steel products in the country, which produces about 27% of global greenhouse gases. Output of key steel products are at their lowest level for five years, and domestic flights have fallen by up to 70% in a month. The measures have also led to a drop of 36% in levels of nitrogen dioxide air pollution over China, according to analysis by climate science website Carbon Brief. Overall, the changes in Chinese society have caused a 40% plunge in output across key industrial sectors, according to the study, which was based on official statistics.
"Jeff Bezos didn’t “donate” $10B to “fight climate change” he’s setting up a $10B venture called the “Bezos Earth Fund.” In other words, he’s founding a bank and using it to invest in “the green sector,” thereby profiting from & influencing how transition happens" - Chosun Chillbo
Running shoes leave large carbon footprint (2013)
According to researchers at MIT, a new pair of typical running shoes generates 30 pounds of carbon emissions, equivalent to keeping a 100-watt light bulb switched on for one week. Their research revealed more than two thirds of the carbon impact came from manufacturing plants and only a small portion from extracting raw materials.
A typical pair of running shoes comprises of 65 discrete parts requiring more than 360 processing steps to assemble, from sewing and cutting to moulding, foaming and heating. Nearly 25 billion shoes were purchased around the world in 2010, the majority of them manufactured in China and other developing countries.
All Eco Sneakers Do Is Kill The Planet a Little Bit Slower (2019)
Eco-sneakers are not going to save the planet. In fact, all they’ll do is kill it a little more slowly than conventional sneakers. The average eco-sneaker cuts emissions by less than 10%. Meanwhile, only 1 in every 29 pairs of sneakers on the market qualifies as an eco-sneakers. Even worse: on average brands charge an additional $48.79 for a pair of eco sneakers -- essentially profiteering from consumers' desires to save the planet, or incentivizing consumers to buy conventional sneakers with even higher carbon emissions.
Uber and Lyft Are Creating Traffic, Not Reducing It
Rather than the apps becoming a model of algorithm-driven efficiency, drivers in major cities cruise for fares without passengers an estimated 40% of the time. Multiple studies show that Uber and Lyft have pulled people away from buses, subways and walking, and that the apps add to the overall amount of driving in the U.S. A study found that over 60% of the slowdown of traffic speeds in San Francisco between 2010 and 2016 was due to the introduction of the ride-hail companies.
Charles David Keeling (1928 – 2005)
Charles David Keeling was an American scientist whose recording of carbon dioxide at the Mauna Loa Observatory first alerted the world to the possibility of anthropogenic contribution to the "greenhouse effect" and global warming. The Keeling Curve measures the progressive buildup of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, in the atmosphere.
