Perceptual reality monitoring: Neural mechanisms dissociating imagination from reality (twitter thread)
Increasing evidence shows that internally generated experience e.g. memory, dreaming and imagery, relies on similar neural mechanisms as externally triggered perception. This overlap complicates perceptual reality monitoring: deciding what is real and what is imagined. In this review, we explored how perceptual reality monitoring might be implemented in the brain.

The Sapir–Whorf hypothesis, also known as the linguistic relativity hypothesis, refers to the proposal that the particular language one speaks influences the way one thinks about reality. Linguistic relativity stands in close relation to semiotic-level concerns with the general relation of language and thought, and to discourse-level concerns with how patterns of language use in cultural context can affect thought.

I finished installing a new bookshelf this morning. This afternoon, someone near our house put a box of used books on the road, to give away. Serendipitously, these books were highly relevant to what I'm currently researching, and brought major breakthroughs. As R.A.Wilson once said, "Reality Is What You Can Get Away With" 👻

Mastering "Reality" Requires Practice
- Timeline Zooming: Psychedelics enable this but with limited control. Other practices that expand consciousness from different time periods enable much more controlled experiences.
- Visualization Manifestation: Internal simulation but external influence is possible. If you can imagine it clearly before your "inner" eye, you can manifest it in the "external" reality.

A reality tunnel is a theoretical subconscious set of mental filters formed from beliefs and experiences, every individual interprets the same world differently, hence "Truth is in the eye of the beholder". The idea being that an individual's perceptions are influenced or determined by their worldview. The idea does not necessarily imply that there is no objective truth; rather that our access to it is mediated through our senses, experience, conditioning, prior beliefs, and other non-objective factors. The term can also apply to groups of people united by beliefs.
