Things science communities (machine learning, neuroscience, ecology, etc) might focus on next:
- The nature of memory as a massively decentralized phenomenon throughout nature. With a particular focus on memory formation and dynamics in mediums like water, electromagnetic fields, ecosystems and (human) bodies.
- The nature of unconventional computing (none silicon based, wetlands-, planetary-, universe-scale, etc.) and the capacity for awareness and agency in emergent complex networks.
- The nature of "randomness" and serendipity in decision-making across diverse (life) forms, with a special focus on awareness, attention and intention of the (animal) observer.
- The nature of relaxation in relation to tension - or put differently, trust/faith/flow VS control/optimization/compression.
- The nature of love and life in relation to theories of evolution and entropy (syntropy etc.).
- The nature of what does any of this even mean, if we embody infinity & non-linear time?

Kenneth O. Stanley - Novel Opportunities in Open-Endedness @ UCL DARK
As interest in the field of open-endedness expands, ideas like continual discovery and increasingly complexity have gained significant attention. The aim of this talk is to bring attention to two lesser-known facets of open-endedness that nevertheless merit significantly more attention. First, evidence so far suggests that representations achieved through open-ended processes seem radically different from representations discovered through optimization, even if they solve the same problem. The implications of this observation are unknown but potentially significant. Second, while the agents themselves in an open-ended system are of course critical, in processes analogous to civilization (as opposed to evolution), the artifacts those agents put into and leave in the environment (e.g. houses and cars for humans) are also critical to the trajectory of the system, yet little studied or understood. New advances, such as Evolution through Large Models, make studying this issue more feasible. The hope is that this talk will inspire further investigation into both considerations.

Deep Neural Networks for Form-Finding of Tensegrity Structures
This paper proposes a new form-finding method based on state-of-the-art deep learning techniques. One of the statical paradigms, a force density method, is substituted for trained deep neural networks to obtain necessary information of tensegrities. It is based on the differential evolution algorithm, where the eigenvalue decomposition process of the force density matrix and the process of the equilibrium matrix are not needed to find the feasible sets of nodal coordinates.

Wireheading?
Practitioners in the A.I, machine learning, generative modeling/art, human augmentation and related domains should be very clear about this: Significant parts of these communities - implicitly or explicitly - are racing towards implementing and perfecting Wireheading and Mind-control, in its many expressions. Let's stop to beat about the bush and openly discuss the socio-spiritual-technical design decisions and implications of such systems, which in the shadows have advanced far further than most choose to believe. Most importantly, let's meditate so we can choose the path forward in a conscious and relaxed way.

While OpenAI's Dale 2 produces some amazing images, its politics are an authoritarian shit-show

Generative Media Industry Crash
The value of pixels and any other media artifact that can be computationally generated (basically all of them) is rapidly falling to close to zero marginal cost. The primary results will be: 1) More people will engage in creative expression - but dramatically less than the developer of creativity augmentation systems like to believe. 2) Tens of millions of people in creative industries will be out of a job permanently and forced to learn alternative skills. Get ready, the time is short. (I wrote these Related, Related, Related pieces on the topic many years ago, that are still somewhat relevant)

Perspective is key, in a world where machine learning is rapidly driving the value of pixels to 0
