The Cost of Sequencing a Human Genome ($942 in 2020)
#Comment: This chart (and the culture that produced it) is comedic on many levels. Firstly, Moore's Law has come to an end and is deeply miss-understood: While technologists like to frame it as "number of transistors double every 2y" - they never truly inquire "WHY does it double?". Its no magic: The law is a metric of unfettered economic growth and mindless accelerationism. The same "let's reduce reality down to a singular number and optimize that like crazy" mentality seems to be a primary driver in the biotech field, with the added bonus of saying "its about your health!". Are there any adults in the room to watch Dr.Frankenstein?

China’s Genetics Giant Wants to Tailor Medicine to Your DNA (Bloomberg) (Archive)
BGI is racing toward a world where your DNA informs your medical decisions—and maybe some of your personal ones. Things could get weird.
"There are limits to what Wang says he’s prepared to contemplate. The company, he points out, is no longer studying the genetic origins of intelligence. But he suggests that, if researchers are able to truly identify genes that produce smarts, a Gattaca-esque push for designer babies is probably inevitable, especially in ultracompetitive China, where there’s already a robust market for genetic tests that supposedly gauge innate talent for math or music. BGI has no plans to help parents customize their offspring, but “there’s lots of people who want to do it,” Wang says. “People never stop searching for interesting things.” Unless, that is, someone stops them."

United Nations approves WHO recommendation to reschedule cannabis in historic vote (mjbizdaily)
The United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) on Wednesday accepted a World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation to remove cannabis and cannabis resin from Schedule IV of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. The historic vote in Vienna could have far-reaching implications for the global medical cannabis industry, ranging from regulatory oversight to scientific research into the plant and its use as a medicine. The eagerly awaited approval of Recommendation 5.1 had a slim majority in favor with 27 votes for, one abstention and 25 votes against.

HIV-Like Virus Edited Out of Primate Genome
Breakthrough brings Temple researchers and their collaborators closer to a cure for human HIV infection. "We show for the first time that a single inoculation of our CRISPR gene-editing construct, carried by an adeno-associated virus, can edit out the SIV genome from infected cells in rhesus macaque monkeys,". The report, which was published online November 27 in the journal Nature Communications.

"The world’s first Psiloscoby" "We can genetically engineer a kombucha SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) to produce psilocybin while it ferments. We can do this by printing genes from magic mushrooms and embedding them into the SCOBY’s DNA. Once we make a single psiloscoby, it can grow and divide and be shared among friends, to brew their own psilobucha."

Russia plans government biometrics database for fingerprints, DNA, facial recognition
Russia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs is planning to stand up a database of fingerprint, DNA and face biometric data collected from Russians and foreigners within the next three years, state news agency TASS writes. Software will be developed for the new Federal Information System of Biometric Accounting by the end of 2023, according to a statement from the Ministry. The database would include foreign citizens and stateless individuals in addition to Russians.

What’s Not Being Said About Pfizer Coronavirus Vaccine
The Pharma giant Pfizer has now announced what they claim were spectacular results in initial human tests. They use an experimental technology known as gene editing, specifically mRNA gene-editing, something never before used in vaccines. Before we rush to get jabbed in hopes of some immunity, we should know more about the radical experimental technology and its lack of precision.

Self-replicating molecules show signs of metabolism for the first time
In a chance discovery, researchers have for the first time observed the emergence of something akin to metabolism in molecules that also self-replicate. The replicator molecules catalyse a reaction that produces compounds that help to make the replicator’s own building blocks. It might be one of the most lifelike chemical systems ever created, combining two of life’s three essential features – replication, metabolism and compartmentalisation.
Scientists Create a Self-Replicating Reproductive Genome in the Lab
For the first time ever, a genome can reproduce itself like a natural one.
Interesting in this context, the following remark by Prof. Dr. Günter von Kiedrowski
"Why replication at all? In the natural context, replication has the same meaning as integration in electronics. I mean, if you are able to do integrate electronic circuitry, you can establish Moore's Law and in chemistry this kind of replication was not addresses so far. But if it is possible to replicate objects, then it is possible to make things cheaper, to pay for complexity"
Do Origin-of-Life Researchers Now Accept Intelligent Design?
As our understanding of cellular biology increases, researchers continuously find that the only framework capable of understanding life’s origin is design-based, and they increasingly have to smuggle design into their research hidden in the language of natural selection, evolution, and self-organization. With time, larger numbers of careful readers will see the true source of the creative power behind life.

From Big Six to Big Four (2019)
OECD study sheds light on concentration and competition in seed markets.
The Big Six, as described in the wiki on DuPont
"On the other hand, if Monsanto and Bayer, the 1st and 3rd largest biotech and seed firms, together with Dow and DuPont being the 4th and 5th largest biotechnology and seed companies in the world respectively, both went through with the mergers, the so-called "Big Six" in the industry would control 63% of the global seed market and 76% of the global agriculture chemical market."
